We begin our concert today with a sonata. Not a major opus, rather a delightful piece by the early Baroque composer, Georg Philip Telemann. Telemann wrote with a lighter hand than his contemporaries, Bach and Handel, in what was known as stile galante (galant style). Sonata in A Major for Flute & Violin, Op 2 No 3 is an excellent example. The opening Siciliana uses the tripping rhythm of a familiar courtly dance by that name. The Vivace is a canon (think of a round) rather than a full-fledged fugue. Lovely passages in parallel thirds and sixths form the Andante movement. And the final Allegro is an appealing mixture of imitation and ornamentation. This sonata is the third in a set of six for any two treble instruments. We chose flute and violin for their contrasting timbres.
