A concerto as chamber music? In this case, yes, because Marcellos's Oboe Concerto in C minor can be played beautifully and authentically by just a few musicians. As a matter of fact, it may be better that way, because one can really hear the layering so characteristic of Baroque music. At the bottom of the texture is harpsichord - in our case, digital harpsichord - which combines with cello to provide a firm bass line and, in addition, fills its plucky chordal harmonies. This layer, then, is called the “basso continuo.”On top is the oboe which, with its piquant quality and restless improvisation, is clearly the solo instrument. At the middle of the texture are two violins and viola, slipping in and out to add character and reinforce the most dramatic moments. This ingredient is called the “ritornello.” The concerto is in three movements: A sturdy Allegro, followed by the familiar and gorgeous Adagio, and concluding with an agile, quick-witted Finale.
