Few in our audience will know music by Malcolm Arnold or realize he was a prolific 20th century composer. Like Telemann, he broke no boundries musically speaking and preferred to write in familiar, comfortable styles. Also like Telemann, his large scale pieces faded quickly, while the shorter chamber pieces are so numerous as to be easily overlooked. Even his film music - 132 film scores, including Bridge Over the River Kwai - has not really brought placeCityArnold the name recognition he deserves. Divertimento for Flute, Oboe & Clarinet features the named instruments as equal partners in a sequence of 6 short pieces, the nature of each nicely described by its title. Think of them as vignettes .. distinct, charming, suggestive rather than literal.
